ARM servers provide extensive PCIe expansion options — systems powered by Ampere Altra Max or AmpereOne CPUs support up to 128 PCIe Gen4 or even Gen5 lanes per socket. This enables the installation of a wide variety of expansion cards, including NVMe SSDs, RAID controllers, high-bandwidth network adapters (SFP+/QSFP+), storage controllers, or even GPUs for AI and HPC workloads.

Ampere servers support eight 72-bit DDR4-3200 channels per socket, delivering high memory bandwidth and up to 4 TB capacity per processor. For data transfer, each socket offers up to 128 PCIe Gen4 lanes — in dual-socket systems, this scales to as many as 192 lanes. These lanes can be flexibly allocated to NVMe SSDs or high-speed network adapters (up to 100 GbE or more). The topology is based on a coherent mesh interconnect, ensuring efficient communication between cores and peripheral devices.

ARM servers support advanced virtualization features, including full interrupt and I/O virtualization (such as GICv3 and SMMUv3 in Ampere Altra). The ARMv8 architecture natively provides hardware virtualization, enabling hypervisors like KVM, Xen, and LXC to run efficiently. With the introduction of 64-bit ARMv8, virtualization has reached a level comparable to x86, making ARM servers well-suited for mainstream cloud and IaaS environments.
