No, a SATA backplane and SATA controller do not understand the SAS protocol. Although the connector mechanically fits, protocol support at the physical level is missing. Conversely, SAS controllers can address SATA drives because SAS is backward compatible. A SAS controller and a SAS-compatible backplane are mandatory for SAS hard drives.

Enterprise SAS HDDs are usually specified for 2 to 2.5 million MTBF hours (a statistical measure) and designed for 24/7 operation at 100% duty cycle. In practice, the economic service life is 3–5 years. Factors such as temperature, vibration, workload, and rebuild frequency significantly affect the actual lifespan.

Queue depth determines how many commands can be submitted to the drive simultaneously. SAS supports significantly higher queue depths than SATA. With parallel accesses, virtualization, and databases, the effective IOPS performance increases significantly because the drive can optimally reorder commands internally (Command Reordering) to minimize mechanical movements.

The rotational speed directly affects the average access time (seek + rotational latency) and thereby the IOPS performance.
  • 7,200 rpm: approximately 4.17 ms average rotational latency
  • 10,000 rpm: approximately 3.0 ms
  • 15,000 rpm: approximately 2.0 ms
Higher rotational speeds increase IOPS, reduce latencies, but also increase power consumption, waste heat, and mechanical wear.
