LGA 2011 (socket R) motherboards

With the LGA 2011 Intel replaces, which is called socket R, the sockets 1366 and 1567 performance and high-end server platforms.

The socket R (belongs to the Romley-R/ Romley-EP platform) is in the server sector for processors the Sandy Bridge EP – and in future also the Ivy Bridge EP – series by Intel and is optimized. In the desktop sector for processors the Sandy Bridge E – series.

The socket LGA 2011 supports quad-channel and current up to DDR3-1600 ECC server RAM, what depends on the CPU.

With Sandy Bridge EP-processors the dual-socket systems are communicating directly via QPI (Intel QuickPath Interconnect) and reaching this way transfer rates up to 8 GT/s (giga transfers per second).

Vantage of the LGA 2011 motherboard is, that already the processors have an integrated interface for USB 3.0 and PCI-express 3.0 (with up to 40 lanes directly controlled).
