LGA 2011 (socket R) processors

With the LGA 2011 Intel replaces, which is called socket R, the sockets 1366 and 1567 performance and high-end server platforms.

The socket r (belongs to the Romley-R/ Romley-EP platform) supports in the server sector the Intel Sandy Bridge EP processors with quad-channel and up to DDR3-1600 ECC server RAM and in the desktop sector Intel Sandy Bridge E processors.

Sandy Bridge EP offers quad-core as well as hexa-core and octa-core Xeon processors, which have up to 20 MB L3-cache.

With Sandy Bridge EP-processors the dual-socket systems are communicating directly via QPI (Intel QuickPath Interconnect) and reaching this way transfer rates up to 8 GT/s (giga transfers per second).

The processors already have an integrated interface for USB 3.0 and PCI-express 3.0 (with up to 40 lanes directly controlled) and are able to communicate therefore directly with the connected components.

The SSE command AVX will be directly supported by the Intel Xeon CPU.
